Bipolar Disorder is a condition that is characterised by extreme mood swings- highs (mania) and lows (depression). It is caused by an imbalance of neurotransmitters (chemicals involved in brain function). It runs in families and can develop at any age. It can last for anywhere between a week to two years depending on the type. It can be treated through Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Lifestyle Management and Mood Stabiliser medication.
I’m sure you’ve all heard of it at some point. I’m also sure most of you have heard people joking that one or the other of their friends have it. What people fail to realise is that this is much more serious than just feeling high or low every now and then. We must think before simply making a statement that someone has it.
We most certainly mustn’t treat someone who has it with disdain. We must have compassion and understand that it is beyond anyone’s control.
